Shabbat Event
Join us for our next Kabbalat Shabbat led by Hanna Jodrey for Shabbat services on Friday evening, July 15 at 7 pm at the Shir Chadash Synagogue (Room 26, Albert Community Centre). Musical instruments will be allowed as sundown is not until 9 pm. Hope to see you there.
In addition, Hanna’s changed Shabbat morning schedule for the summer is as follows:
She will lead the 10 a.m. Shabbat services on July 2 and August 6.
We hope you can join us then as well (no musical instruments).
Masks are strongly encouraged, and we ask that you maintain the prescribed distance.
Changes to the Shabbat Services
(Updated June 1, 2022)
We continue to hold in-person Shabbat morning services. This summer, Hannah Jodrey will lead Shabbat morning services on July 2 and August 6. Linda Epstein will lead on the other Shabbatot.
Erev Shabbat continues to be on hold for now; however we are beginning to make small steps toward bringing them back. Your reaction and attendance will make a big difference in how we move forward.
Beginning July 15, Hanna Jodrey hopes to lead in-person Kabbalat Shabbat and Erev Shabbat services, beginning at 7:00 pm, generally on the middle Friday of the month. During the summer, these will include musical instruments before sunset (before Shabbat has begun).
For our members’ safety, we will continue to follow Covid protocols by distancing our chairs; however masks will be strongly encouraged rather than mandatory. This will allow us to resume onegs following Shabbat services.
If you have someone new for the Mishaberach list or someone to remove from it, and/or the Yahrzeit list, please let us know. If you would like an Aliyah by proxy, also let Linda know, and we will accommodate if the Torah is read.
Contact Suzanne Basker or Linda Epstein if you are able and willing to read from the Torah.
ReJewvenation
Malvina Rapko and Hanna Jodrey hope to re-launch ReJewvenation, an engaging and welcoming Kabbalat Shabbat musical services one Friday monthly. Regardless of affiliation, all Jewish people and their families are enthusiastically welcomed and encouraged to join us as we greet Shabbat together, with traditional blessings and songs. For further information, contact one of the organizers: hanna.jodrey@gmail.com or malvinarapko@gmail.com
Watch for updates.
High Holy Days
We are beginning to plan the High Holy Day services (Rosh HaShanah is Sunday, September 25 – Erev – to Tuesday, September 27 & Yom Kippur is Tuesday, October 4 -Erev – and Wednesday, October 5). Please let us know if you will be able to attend, and if you are having guests who would also attend. We hope that you will say “yes” when we call to give you and them the honour of an Aliyah. Also, if you have a contact living nearby who could lead a Conservative egalitarian High Holy Day service (including reading the Torah), please let Linda, Suzanne or Mary know.
Condolences
Sincere condolences to the Gonick family and loved ones on the passing of our beloved friend and congregation member Bette Ellen Gonick z"l. We will miss her.
An invitation to join the CJHSD
We (CJHSD) are reaching out to you today on an issue specifically related to Holocaust Survivors resident in Canada.
As many of you know, there are new programs and changes to existing programs related to support for the Survivor community. As the Canadian representative to both the Claims Conference and the Holocaust Restitution Committee, CIJA regularly has important information to transmit to Survivors about programs, registration etc.
In addition, the Canadian Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Descendants group (CJHSD) is both affiliated with and supported by CIJA. Unfortunately, many – perhaps even most – Survivors are not registered with us.
In cooperation with the CJHSD, we are undertaking a new registration drive. As part of that effort, we hope you will agree to disseminate an information flyer to your respective list-serves, encouraging survivors and / or their children to register, for which there is no cost.
The purpose of the registration is limited to providing them with information about their rights, the programs available to them, and other related initiatives that can enhance their quality of life.
We hope to build as comprehensive a list as possible of Survivors in their respective provinces.
You will find CJHSD membership application forms - to fill out online and also to download - in English, French, Russian, Hebrew and Yiddish here. Please share this link with your network and encourage them to join CJHSD and to spread the word among their networks.
There is NO membership fee and, together, we are stronger.
If you have any questions about the CJHSD, please be in touch with Cindy Osheroff at cosheroff@cija.ca.
We thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Kindest regards,
Shimon Koffler Fogel President & CEO, CIJA
Pinchas Gutter Co-President, CJHSD
Edit Kuper Co-President, CJHSD
