Cemetery and Chevra Kaddisha

Picture
_When Congregation Shir Chadash was formed first on the agenda was the establishment of a cemetery and a Hebrew School. With that in mind Peter Holdstock z"l, along with the Rabbi approached Woodlawn and asked about setting aside some property for the said purpose of establishing a Jewish section there. Woodlawn cemetery was very gracious and accommodating and in March 2000 our Cemetery was consecrated. Sadly our beloved Peter was the first person of our Congregation to be buried there.

Shir Chadash immediately formed a Chevra Kaddisha and Mary Melnychuk has served as committee chair ever since, with community members volunteering to do Taharah as required, setting up funerals and arranging shomer  when families have wanted this service. We have installed gates and Woodlawn has fenced off our cemetery and provides perpetual care of the graves there. We have carried out two book burials and have been able to comply with all aspects of providing a Jewish burial, as well as having members attend related conferences.

Congregation Shir Chadash offers the full range of chevra kaddisha, funeral and cemetery services. There is a discount for Shir Chadash members. For more information email shir.chadash@sasktel.net or call 306-242-3756.
