Our History and More

Albert Community Centre, home of Congregation Shir Chadash.
Congregation Shir Chadash was formed in March 6, 2000.
Rabbi Steven Kaplan served Congregation Shir Chadash from 2000 to 2003. Religious services are now led by members. High Holy Day services are conducted by members and/or an invited chazzan (cantor).
Our congregation is governed by a board that includes President, Past President, Treasurer, Secretary, Membership, Ritual, Constitution, Chevra Kadisha (burial committee), Education, Newsletter, Archives, Kashrut (maintaining Jewish dietary laws), Sisterhood, and Onegs (Joy of Sabbath).

Following is additional information about our shul:

- • a small Conservative egalitarian congregation of about 30 to 50 members and friends
- Congregation Shir Chadash benefits from the hard work of dedicated volunteers and the generous donations of members and friends.
- • keeps kosher (follows Jewish dietary laws) within synagogue and at all celebrations and Seders (Passover meals)
- • includes a Sisterhood branch
- • offers full Jewish Sabbath services weekly (Friday evening and Saturday morning); services on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Pesach and other Holy Days
- • holds celebrations for Purim, Chanukah, Yom Ha’atzmaut and community Passover seders
- • has an Education committee offering educational programs to our members
- • publishes a bi-monthly newsletter
- • has developed the Rachel Neumann Memorial Library
- • sponsors a speaker/documentary and candle lighting on Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), which frequently attracts large public attendance
- • has its own cemetery and offers full funeral services
Other activities:

- January 25, 2001: Froelich Festival (Froelich, a Yiddish word meaning joyful) – a well attended multi-cultural evening of music, dancing, and displays held at the Cosmo Centre in Nutana, with participation by a number of local ethnic groups
- July 1, 2001: an Afternoon of Klezical Music with Cantor Moishe Friedler and Heise Latkes
- May–June 2005: Anne Frank Exhibit – participated in organization and as volunteers at exhibit
- March 19, 20, 2011: Tenth Anniversary celebration, "Purim with a Twist," was held in conjunction with Purim holiday and events included a costume ball, and storytelling and music with Mark Novak and Renee Brachfeld of Washington, DC
